Twitter

Hi! Thanks for checking out my ‘just for people on Twitter’ page.

I’m Stef on Twitter and if you’re thinking about following me, here’s some info on how I use the service. But first, here’s a picture of my tweets:

A bit about me: I’m a thirty year old dad, I live in Birmingham, UK. I’m into having lots of web ideas, talking about possibilities and making the best ones a reality. I run 3form, which for want of a better term is my ‘ideas lab’ where I collaborate with exciting people on a variety of (ahem) award-winning projects.

I use Twitter as my main way of keeping in touch with people. I don’t really use Facebook, Myspace and so on. As a result I’m quite ‘noisy‘ (I tweet a lot) but I try to be useful and relevant and if a conversation kicks off I try to use direct messages a lot so that I don’t annoy people that aren’t in on the conversation.

If a direct message from me freaks you out just say so – I’m learning about how ‘rude’ DMs appear to be. But basically I treat them as an ‘aside’ or to convey something just to one person rather than bombarding others with too much chatter.

I tweet a lot about Birmingham, where I live and I tend to kick off conversations with people who live near me about things that matter to us as a community. I’ve also made a someone locally-famous page of people you should connect to if you want to get ‘in’ to the Birmingham twitter conversation.

But to balance that out I also try to be useful for people who work in a similar way/area/niche as me and tend to retweet other people’s exciting links and thoughts as well as adding my own into the mix.

I like to connect with a lot of people, and I tend to follow back so that I can have two-way conversations. I’m experimenting with always following back but it’s hit and miss, but I don’t send those irritating ‘hey thanks for following me, check out my blog and get a 50% discount on my ebook’ messages. Occasionally following back doesn’t work out so I do have a few less ‘followees’ than ‘followers’ but not like ‘I follow ten people and one thousand follow me’ style broadcasting.

I don’t tend to send lots of links to my blog, or pipe my delicious or google reader feed into my stream – everything I do is hand-written, for better or worse. You can read all that stuff on my lifestream at stef.io if you’re interested though.

Where do I tweet? I’m on it all the time! I have an iPhone and I’d recommend the excellent Tweetie for managing multiple accounts and generally being easier to use than Twitter.com itself. I also have TweetDeck open on my computer most of the time. It lets you have groups (which was an idea I had but never did :/ ). I have three ‘groups’ that I keep an eye on – close friends, people around me and people I’m generally in conversation with, which means I can make sense of following 1000 people-ish. Also, I’d recommend Power Twitter for making Twitter a little bit more engaging if you like that kind of thing.

I enjoy making Twitter-enabled applications – like Tweetlet and Twadio as well as making sure that other things I make have Twitter connections built in, like Odadeo and I So Wish. Drop me a line if you have an idea – Twadio for instance took about 14 hours whilst learning a new language and feeding a toddler.

Hopefully I’ll connect with you on Twitter and have amazingly useful and wonderful exchanges of inspirational stuff (or just a good natter from time to time).

Stef
