About me

I’m an ideas guy. I do Webby award-winning stuff.

My motto is “create something every day” and I’ve been trying hard to stick to that since 1999.

I am a current Clore Fellow, and until 2010 I am on an intensive programme of cultural leadership development which sees me taking a step back from many of the things I have been involved in to date to focus on my professional development.

I am currently working at an exciting new startup in London, the first investment by the All In Group, where I am co-founder and head of innovation.

“Agile” is the buzzword of the day to describe how we are working. Experiment, pick the bits that work, develop them, release new software every fortnight – that’s the cycle. My day-to-day is a combination of thinking about “what’s next”, coding (TDD Ruby, Rspec, Cucumber, Qt, C++, Javascript, API wrangling…) and problem solving. I’m on an amazing learning curve.

For many years I’ve been involved in digital media in Birmingham, and with my new role at All In I’ve made the move to London. I’m maintaining that strong Birmingham connection with my role as Digital Culture Associate at the Made Media web development agency.

In 2009 I co-founded Help Me Investigate, an innovative peer-to-peer journalism experiment, prior to that co-founded the experimental independent record label Type both of which are going from strength to strength.

In 2008 I set up Odadeo – the social networking and digital toolbox for dads. We want to answer the question “How am I going to be a better dad?”. The Observer chose me as one of the top 5 ‘ones to watch’ in their Courvoisier Future 500 list for 2009 – no pressure then!

Before that I ran 3form, an award-winning creative digital agency where I cut my teeth on digital production. I helped set up Plus – the international design festival held in Birmingham annually, was on the board of Fierce Festival – ‘the performance festival that bites’, on the board of trustees of a school, helped launch the blog Created in Birmingham, and was one of the founders of Creative Republic WM, the representative, lobbying and networking group for the creative and cultural industries in Birmingham and the West Midlands, UK.

My partner Emily Quinton is a successful London wedding photographer and I help her with the digital side of her business, as well as doing a fair share of the photography too.

I’m a father of two young kids and enjoy spending my spare time pretending to be a monster for them, doing photography, DJing when I get the chance (though increasingly less these days), spending far too much time on Twitter and generally keeping up to date with the latest trends and thinking about “what’s next?”

If you’d like to work with me in some way, or just fancy a chat, drop me a message on Twitter or email me stef@stef.io
